It was improv night at Point Breeze on Saturday. Windfall, a group of late 1970s rockers, have reunited to try to relive their glory days. They played a lot of 70s and 80s standards. We tried to Swing, Hustle, Cha-Cha, or Rumba to their beat. Did you know you could Rumba to Credence Clearwater Revival and to Janis Joplin tunes? Well you can and we did. It was interesting that on the same song people were seen doing freestyle, Rumba and Swing. It’s all in how you interpret the beat. So learn the steps and improvise. Dance is all about creativity.

Here is the lineup for this weekend.

Friday Feb. 12th

City Side – Woonsocket – The band is Batteries not included. Expect to dance a lot of Hustle.

Twin Rivers – Lincoln – The ever popular Eight to the Bar is playing. Not sure if they will be playing Swing or Motown. Whatever the beat we can dance to it; or we just improvise.

Gilreins – Worcester – Go out and Swing dance to the beat of the Red Riders. The dance floor is small, so tuck in your elbows.

Saturday Feb. 13th

City Side- The band is Sugar. Again this could be an opportunity to dance Hustle and some Swing. You just might lapse into Freestyle.

Frohsinn Club – Shrewsbury – Our friend MoCo is playing. A great entertainer and a good musician. So go on over and shake up the Frohsinn. This is your chance to reveal all of those steps you have been hiding.

Gilreins – The Dirty Mac Blues Band is playing. If you like Blues you will love Gilreins. You can sit and listen or you can dance. The choice is up to you.

Speakers Night Club – Marlboro – The Allens are playing.

Knights of Columbus – Cranston, RI – This is a mecca for ballroom dancophiles. Lot’s of good dancers here. Don’t let them intimidate you. Just jump into the line of dance and have fun. Trish of American Ballroom and Latin Dance will be teaching a Rumba lesson.

Point Breeze – Webster – She’s Busy is playing. I can’t comment on the group but you’ll love the dance floor.

Sunday Feb. 14th Valentine’s Day

Leominster Elks – Eight to the Bar will be playing non stop Swing.

Salsa Storm – Worcester – There will be a group Salsa lesson from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM and then dancing until 8:30 PM. Get on over and treat yourself to some Latin rhythms.

Get out this weekend and kick up your heels with your Valentine.

Many of the WorcesterScene viewers have asked the same question, “where can we go to dance?” While our first answers have been some of the great bars and clubs, we soon realized that they wanted the venues for ballroom, salsa, and the more organized dancing beyond the bump-and-grind that dominate many clubs in the area. With that said, each week we will compile some information that is obtained by those who know where the “in” spots are for this type of dance and entertainment. As always, our friends at Salsa Storm always have something exciting going on, be certain to check them out and tell them that WorcesterScene sent you!

Friday, February 5th

Maironis Park - Dancing will be upstairs. So this is a great opportunity to dance all those ballroom steps you have learned. There will be a lesson in the Quickstep.

Chicken Bone (Framingham) – Ernie and the Automatics will be playing. Ernie of Ernie Boch fame will have you rocking. So go to the Bone to Swing, Hustle and freestyle.

Poise Style and Motion – This venue is similar to Maironis Park. Get a lesson and dance for a couple of hours, ballroom only dancing.

Saturday, February 6th

Maironis Park - This is singles night, but couples can attend. Ozzie and his DJ will be spinning CDs. You can practice whatever dance steps you know.

Point Breeze (Webster) – Windfall will be playing. They specialize in Classic Rock and some Blues.

Gilreins – Jon Short is playing. This will be mostly listening to good Blues. Not sure if you will be able to dance to his music.

Frohsinn Club – Preferred Sound will be turning up the amps in an effort to keep everyone awake. I keep saying that this is a great spot for anyone who is new to ballroom, or just wants to polish some steps or routines.

Sunday, February 7th

PNI Club, Worcester – Dancing is 4:30 to 8:30. This will be ballroom dancing.

Leominster Elks – There is no band this week. Alan will be selecting music from his Swing CD collection.

Salsa Storm (Worcester) - You all know how to dance Salsa. So head on over to see how you measure up. Dancing is from 5:00 to 8:30.

Looking for a very well known band to dance to? Friday, February 12th Eight to the Bar will be playing at Twin Rivers Casino.

A special thanks to our contributor with his pulse on the dance scene!
